The Juan Hernández Community or Cuesta los Hernández is a community located in the Adjuntas municipality of Puerto Rico. The founder of this community group, Mr. Juan Hernández, in 1970 began the process of drilling a well to provide water to the community. In 1973 the first well was built, which did not provide the water needed to supply the community. In 1974, before passing away, Don Juan Hernández managed to see the fruit of his work. His relatives and neighbors continued with the task for the benefit of the community. By 1980, through the Rural Development Corporation he dug a well that gave 100 gallons per minute. Since then, that well has been working. In 2003, the community entered corporation status in compliance with all the requirements of state law to date.
La Comunidad Juan Hernández o Cuesta los Hernández es una comunidad ubicada en el municipio Adjuntas de Puerto Rico. El fundador de este grupo comunitario, el Sr. Juan Hernández, en 1970 inició el proceso de perforación de un pozo para dar agua a la comunidad. En 1973 se construyó el primer pozo, que no proporcionó el agua necesaria para abastecer a la comunidad. En 1974, antes de fallecer, Don Juan Hernández logró ver el fruto de su trabajo. Sus familiares y vecinos continuaron con la tarea en beneficio de la comunidad. Para 1980, a través de la Corporación de Desarrollo Rural cavó un pozo que dio 100 galones por minuto. Desde entonces, ese pozo ha estado funcionando. En 2003, la comunidad ingresó al estado de corporación en cumplimiento con todos los requisitos de la ley estatal hasta la fecha.

La misión de la comunidad de Juan Hernández Inc. es el compromiso y el bienestar de su comunidad al brindar un servicio de agua potable eficiente y de alta calidad. La Comunidad se ha fijado como objetivo brindar un Sistema comunitario que sea eficiente en la prestación del servicio de agua potable, generando beneficios en la cultura ambiental y creando conciencia sobre la protección y uso de los recursos naturales. Nuestra corporación asegurará un servicio operativo competitivo, estable y financiero que garantice a los residentes un servicio sustentable y de buena calidad.

The community project plan is based on the current well contamination problem. The community’s main source of water is supplied by a well that has been showing high concentrations of nitrate. This problem is exacerbated during periods of low rainfall in the area. The proposed project will be divided into two parts; an investigation and analysis of soil and water from adjacent areas near the community well to establish a possible source of contamination. The community is very interested in finding and detecting the source of nitrate contamination. The second part of the proposed project will provide the community with educational resources, first to avoid further practices that could lead to contamination of the well. By partnering with TechnoServe, best practice guidance and training will be offered to all agricultural farms located near a shared water aquifer. Second, pre-existing educational resources will be provided to NEON to help the community understand the science behind water quality monitoring.
El plan del proyecto comunitario se basa en el problema actual de contaminación de pozos. La principal fuente de agua de la comunidad es abastecida por un pozo que ha venido presentando altas concentraciones de nitrato. Este problema se agrava durante los períodos de escasas precipitaciones en la zona. El proyecto propuesto se dividirá en dos partes; una investigación y análisis de suelos y agua de áreas adyacentes cerca del pozo comunitario para establecer una posible fuente de contaminación. La comunidad está muy interesada en encontrar y detectar el origen de la contaminación por nitratos. La segunda parte del proyecto propuesto proporcionará a la comunidad recursos educativos, primero para evitar más prácticas que puedan conducir a la contaminación del pozo. Al asociarse con TechnoServe, se ofrecerá orientación y capacitación sobre las mejores prácticas a todas las granjas agrícolas ubicadas cerca de un acuífero de agua compartido. En segundo lugar, se proporcionarán recursos educativos preexistentes a NEON para ayudar a la comunidad a comprender la ciencia detrás del monitoreo de la calidad del agua.

Arlene M. Megill-Irizarry is a Fauna Field Ecologist at the National Ecological Observatory Network with 5 years of experience in Fauna and Flora. She received a B.S. in Biology with a minor on Entomology from the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Campus and is currently pursuing an M.S. in Environmental Science at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. Her research interest is in Ground Beetles Ecology and Environmental Planning.
The scientist selected for this project will work with the community to determine the source of contamination by analyzing possible contamination sources and provide an action plan to prevent and or mitigate further contamination and provide the community with answers on the existing problem.

TechnoServe aims to help rebuild this industry, training thousands of smallholder coffee farmers to significantly increase their yields and help them access better farming supplies, financing, and markets.
The company’s vision within the community is to provide agroeconomic education to farmers so that their practices are more productive using correct procedures while respecting the environment as well as offering financial counseling so that the income obtained will not only support the farms, but also support families.
Our Puerto Rico office is in the municipality of Adjuntas since it is where most farms in Puerto Rico are located. Also, three of our team members are residents of Adjuntas, what makes this personal to us. Noting that the Juan Hernandez Community has a problem of nitrate contamination in its water reserves, TechnoServe will offer free education services to provide support to farmers in the area with more organic and safer practices. We will also serve as a connection amongst the agricultural sector of the island in search for the necessary resources needed to solve this problem.

Tras la devastadora estela del huracán María en 2017, Puerto Rico perdió aproximadamente el 80 por ciento de sus plantaciones de café, paralizando un sector importante de su economía. TechnoServe tiene como objetivo ayudar a reconstruir esta industria, capacitando a miles de pequeños productores de café para aumentar significativamente sus rendimientos y ayudarlos a acceder a mejores suministros agrícolas, financiamiento y mercados.
La visión de la empresa dentro de la comunidad es brindar educación agroeconómica a los agricultores para que sus prácticas sean más productivas utilizando procedimientos correctos respetando el medio ambiente además de brindar asesoría financiera para que los ingresos obtenidos no solo sostengan a las fincas, sino también a las familias.
Nuestra oficina de Puerto Rico se encuentra en el municipio de Adjuntas ya que es donde se encuentran la mayoría de las fincas en Puerto Rico. Además, tres de los miembros de nuestro equipo son residentes de Adjuntas, lo que hace que esto sea personal para nosotros. Teniendo en cuenta que la comunidad de Juan Hernández tiene un problema de contaminación por nitratos en sus reservas de agua, TechnoServe ofrecerá servicios de educación gratuitos para brindar apoyo a los agricultores de la zona con prácticas más orgánicas y seguras. También serviremos de enlace entre el sector agrícola de la isla en la búsqueda de los recursos necesarios para solucionar este problema.
