Community Lead Highlight: Ana Karen Novoa Rodríguez
A native of the community of Coatepec, Mexico, Community Lead and General Manager of FIDECOAGUA, Ana Karen Novoa Rodríguez, joined the 2024 May cohort of AGU Thriving Earth Exchange with the hope of finding the tools and technical skills to collect data to enable the community to advocate more effectively for conservation. In 2002, the authorities became concerned about the effects of these droughts and decided to create the first payment program for environmental services in Mexico: FIDECOAGUA. Its mission is to conserve what remains of the forest to protect the local water supply. For Ana Karen and the community of Coatepec, the interest, curiosity, and desire to keep learning about the current state of the monitored rivers water have grown since joining nearly a year ago.
Una nativa de la comunidad de Coatepec, México, líder comunitaria y gerente general de FIDECOAGUA, Ana Karen Novoa Rodríguez, se unió a la convocatoria de mayo de 2024 del programa de ciencias comunitarias de AGU Thriving Earth Exchange después de reconocer que faltaba ayuda técnica para recoger datos que permitan a la comunidad abogar por sus necesidades de conservación. En 2002, las autoridades se preocuparon por los efectos de las sequías y decidieron crear el primer programa por “pago de servicios ambientales” en México: FIDECOAGUA. La misión de FIDECOAGUA es conservar el bosque para proteger los recursos de agua a nivel local. Para Ana Karen y la comunidad de Coatepec, el interés, la curiosidad y las ganas de seguir aprendiendo sobre el estado actual del agua de los ríos monitoreados han crecido desde que se unieron al programa hace casi un año.
Tell us about your Thriving Earth Exchange project. Cuéntanos sobre tu proyecto de Thriving Earth Exchange.
FIDECOAGUA is a Decentralized Public Organization, created in 2002 with the objective of concentrate resources from the Public and Private Sector to apply a Payment for Environmental Services (PSA) Program for the protection of the Mesophyllous Mountain Forest (MMF). The FIDECOAGUA community includes 172 owners that protect 1,406 hectares of forest in the mountainous area of the municipality of Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico. The project with AGU Thriving Earth Exchange will allow us to obtain concrete data that motivates the community to continue contributing to forest conservation. For this reason, FIDECOAGUA’s alliance with AGU Thriving Earth Exchange will help obtain the collection of hydrological data regarding to the quality of the water in the presence of the mountain cloud forest that reveals the importance of continuing with conservation efforts and at the same time motivating private initiative and society to be able to invest within the Payment for Environmental Services, and if it’s possible we will integrate data on the uptake of CO2 in the air in the different ecological strata that cover the 12 inhabitant communities of this ecosystem.
FIDECOAGUA es un Organismo Público Descentralizado, creado en 2002 con el objetivo de concentrar recursos del Sector Público y Privado para aplicar un Programa de Pago por Servicios Ambientales (PSA) para la protección del Bosque Mesofílico de Montaña (MMF). La comunidad de FIDECOAGUA cuenta con 172 propietarios que protegen 1,406 hectáreas de bosque en la zona montañosa del municipio de Coatepec, Veracruz, México. El proyecto con AGU Thriving Earth Exchange nos permitirá obtener datos concretos que motiven a la comunidad a seguir contribuyendo a la conservación de los bosques. Por esta razón, la alianza de FIDECOAGUA con AGU Thriving Earth Exchange ayudará a obtener la recolección de datos hidrológicos respecto a la calidad del agua en presencia del bosque nuboso de montaña que revelan la importancia de continuar con los esfuerzos de conservación y al mismo tiempo motivar a la iniciativa privada y a la sociedad a poder invertir dentro del Pago por Servicios Ambientales, y si es posible, integraremos datos sobre la absorción de CO2 en el aire en los diferentes estratos ecológicos que cubren las 12 comunidades de habitantes de este ecosistema.

What inspired you to get involved in community science? ¿Qué te inspiró a involucrarte en la ciencia comunitaria?
Since childhood, I grew up surrounded by the majestic cloud forest. Having a quality of life so influenced by the forest allowed me to appreciate the finite nature of natural resources. As I grew up professionally, I understood that any positive impact on nature must originate from community actions. We are not alone in this world; we are a collective, and as such, we must respond together. A strengthened and resilient community must be a community grounded in science. The more information we have about how our ecosystem works and our role within it, the easier it will be to remedy and guide our impact in a sustainable and dignified way. In the words of Socrates, “If you want to change the world, start by understanding your little corner of it.” My corner is the cloud forest.
Desde niña, crecí rodeado del bosque mesofílico. Tener una calidad de vida tan influenciada por el bosque me permitió apreciar la finitud de los recursos naturales. A medida que crecí profesionalmente, entendí que cualquier impacto positivo en la naturaleza debe originarse en las acciones de la comunidad. No estamos solos en este mundo; Somos un colectivo y, como tal, debemos responder juntos. Una comunidad fortalecida y resiliente debe ser una comunidad basada en la ciencia. Cuanta más información tengamos sobre cómo funciona nuestro ecosistema y nuestro papel dentro de él, más fácil será remediar y orientar nuestro impacto de forma sostenible y digna. En palabras de Sócrates: “Si quieres cambiar el mundo, empieza por entender tu pequeño rincón del mismo“. Mi rincón es el bosque nuboso.
Can you share a memorable experience from your community science project with Thriving Earth Exchange? ¿Puedes compartir una experiencia memorable de tu proyecto de ciencia comunitaria con Thriving Earth Exchange?
Within the project, we have the wonderful remote guidance of our volunteer Catalina and our scientist Dr. Enrique, but above all, we have the participation of citizen volunteers of various ages and professions who help collect data in the field. Month by month, the interest, curiosity, and desire to keep learning about the current state of the monitored rivers´ water have grown. The rain or cold weather hasn’t stopped the volunteers from getting into the river to gather data. This gives us faith that the project we are carrying out with Thriving Earth Exchange will endure beyond the allocated time, that the desire to continue learning about the cloud forest will grow even stronger, and that the water database will be strengthened over time. The forest belongs to everyone, and it has been a pleasure to share this experience with such dedicated volunteers.
Dentro del proyecto, contamos con la maravillosa guía remota de nuestra voluntaria Catalina y nuestro científico Dr. Enrique, pero sobre todo, contamos con la participación de ciudadanos voluntarios de diversas edades y profesiones que ayudan a recopilar datos en campo. Mes a mes, el interés, la curiosidad y las ganas de seguir aprendiendo sobre el estado actual del agua de los ríos monitoreados han crecido. La lluvia o el frío no han impedido que los voluntarios se adentren en el río para recopilar datos. Esto nos da fe de que el proyecto que estamos llevando a cabo con Thriving Earth Exchange perdurará más allá del tiempo asignado, que las ganas de seguir aprendiendo sobre el bosque nuboso se fortalecerán aún más y que la base de datos de agua se fortalecerá con el tiempo. El bosque es de todos, y ha sido un placer compartir esta experiencia con voluntarios tan dedicados.
How do you think community science can make a positive impact in our society? ¿Cómo crees que la ciencia comunitaria puede tener un impacto positivo en nuestra sociedad?
I firmly believe that to achieve sustainable global results, we must start with local actions aligned with the environmental, social, and economic needs of a community. To develop these actions, we need a comprehensive perspective, and to be truly comprehensive, we must have scientific tools. Today, an organized community can create change, but an organized community with science can generate a historic impact. Understanding the how and why of nature will help us comprehend our role within that same system and, in turn, give us the confidence to make aligned and collective decisions. We have the right to a good quality of life, but above all, we have the responsibility to stay informed and build a strong community identity with science to positively impact our ecosystems.
Creo firmemente que para lograr resultados globales sostenibles, debemos comenzar con acciones locales alineadas con las necesidades ambientales, sociales y económicas de una comunidad. Para desarrollar estas acciones, necesitamos una perspectiva integral, y para ser verdaderamente integrales, debemos contar con herramientas científicas. Hoy en día, una comunidad organizada puede crear un cambio, pero una comunidad organizada con ciencia puede generar un impacto histórico. Entender el cómo y el por qué de la naturaleza nos ayudará a comprender nuestro papel dentro de ese mismo sistema y, a su vez, nos dará la confianza para tomar decisiones alineadas y colectivas. Tenemos derecho a una buena calidad de vida, pero sobre todo, tenemos la responsabilidad de mantenernos informados y construir una fuerte identidad comunitaria con la ciencia para impactar positivamente en nuestros ecosistemas.
