Fellow Highlight: Elvira Lafuente
After living in more than five different countries and furthering her academic research in evolutionary biology, Elvira joined the September 2024 fellow cohort. Originally from Spain, Elvira is a scientist with a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology, and her academic research explores how organisms cope with environmental challenges like changes in temperature or pollution. Her main focus is on how these factors influence the development of organisms and the evolution of populations. Based in Lisbon and fluent in ‘Portuñol,’ she is also a DIY enthusiast with a creative yet practical approach to life.
Después de vivir en más de cinco países diferentes y avanzar en su investigación académica en la biología evolutiva, Elvira se unió a la convocatoria de septiembre 2024. Nacida en España, Elvira es una científica con un doctorado en Biología Evolutiva, y su investigación académica explora cómo los organismos se enfrentan a desafíos ambientales como los cambios de temperatura o la contaminación. Su enfoque principal es cómo estos factores influyen en el desarrollo de los organismos y la evolución de las poblaciones. Ahora vive en Lisboa y habla el portuñol y también es una entusiasta del bricolaje con un enfoque creativo y práctico de la vida.
Tell us about the Thriving Earth Exchange project you are a part of. Cuéntanos sobre el proyecto Thriving Earth Exchange en el que participas.
The project integrates ecological research into educational practices at Colegio Nueva Andalucía in Soacha, Colombia, focusing on assessing the health of the Tierra Blanca wetland with bioindicators and water quality analyses. This project is about more than conservation—it is about equipping students with skills, confidence, and a sense of ownership over their environment. Read more about the project here.
El proyecto integra la investigación ecológica en las prácticas educativas del Colegio Nueva Andalucía en Soacha, Colombia, centrándose en evaluar la salud del humedal Tierra Blanca mediante bioindicadores y análisis de calidad del agua. What inspired you to get involved in community science? ¿Qué te inspiró a involucrarte en la ciencia comunitaria?
After years in research, I started feeling disconnected from the real-world impact of science. Community science offered a way to change that. It is incredibly rewarding to see people use science to tackle issues that matter to them, turning knowledge into action. For me, it is a way to re-engage with the world, make a tangible difference, and be part of something bigger.
Después de años en la investigación, empecé a sentirme desconectada del impacto real de la ciencia en el mundo. La ciencia comunitaria me ofreció una forma de cambiar eso. Es increíblemente gratificante ver cómo las personas usan la ciencia para abordar problemas que les afectan directamente, convirtiendo el conocimiento en acción. Para mí, es una manera de reconectarme con el mundo, generar un impacto tangible y ser parte de algo más grande.
Can you share a memorable experience from your work as a community science fellow with Thriving Earth Exchange?

One of the moments that stayed with me was my first conversations with community leaders. Their passion for improving both their students’ education and their environment was contagious. From the start, it felt like a true collaboration—one where science wasn’t just a tool, but a shared effort toward meaningful change.
Uno de los momentos que más me marcó fueron mis primeras conversaciones con los líderes comunitarios. Su pasión por mejorar tanto la educación de sus estudiantes como su entorno era contagiosa. Desde el principio, se sintió como una verdadera colaboración, donde la ciencia no era solo una herramienta, sino un esfuerzo compartido hacia un cambio significativo.
How do you think community science can make a positive impact in our society?
¿Cómo crees que la ciencia comunitaria puede tener un impacto positivo en nuestra sociedad?
Community science brings people together to solve problems that directly affect them. It gives communities a voice, fosters collaboration, and makes research more accessible and actionable. When people see the impact of science in their own lives, it builds trust, strengthens communities, and has the potential to drive lasting change.
La ciencia comunitaria reúne a las personas para resolver problemas que las afectan directamente. Da voz a las comunidades, fomenta la colaboración y hace que la investigación sea más accesible y aplicable. Cuando las personas ven el impacto de la ciencia en sus propias vidas, se genera confianza, se fortalecen las comunidades y se abre la posibilidad de impulsar cambios duraderos.
